About event

A new exhibition opening this spring at The Little Gallery in Marlborough will explore the dramatic evolution of 20th century art, bringing together an exceptional selection of paintings, sculpture and ceramics from Britain and beyond.

The exhibition charts the shifting artistic movements that defined the last century, beginning with Impressionism and Post Impressionism through works by Harold Harvey, John Duncan Fergusson and Richard Eurich, represented by an evocative work of a steam train passing through the Wiltshire Downs. The radical spirit of London’s 1960s Avant Garde is also reflected in works by David Hockney and Patrick Procktor, artists whose distinctive styles helped reshape British contemporary art. A particular highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of four works from the studio of Anthony Whishaw (b.1930), including the rare Interior with Musicians (1967), which was directly inspired by the artist encountering Pink Floyd rehearing next door to his studio in Notting Hill Gate for one of their first ‘underground’ gigs. A graduate of the Royal College of Art alongside Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley and Joe Tilson, Whishaw has enjoyed a celebrated career spanning more than six decades, and the selected works offer a rare opportunity to see examples drawn directly from the artist’s studio. ‘ It’s a pleasure to be able to show such a fantastic selection of works in our gallery in Marlborough, as our exhibition programme continues to go from strength to strength. Many works form part of our collection at Winsor Birch, with others from long held private collections .’ Charlie Minter, director of Winsor Birch. Alongside the paintings, the exhibition also celebrates the importance of three- dimensional form. Sculpture and studio ceramics, fields increasingly recognised for their influence in modern art, are represented by key practitioners including Robert Adams, Bernard Leach and Ewen Henderson. ‘ We’re particularly delighted to be exhibiting some beautiful, hand-crafted British studio ceramics, a discipline which has received widespread international attention and become a highly collectable area. With works across price points, there are many works to be enjoyed and valued.’ Charlie Minter, director of Winsor Birch. The exhibition also features Elisabeth Frink’s Mirage II from 1967, a powerful bronze by one of the leading post-War sculptors and whose work has a strong connection to the region, with the Frink Collection housed at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery in Dorchester. This three-week exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore wonderful examples of British painting, sculpture and ceramics across the 20th century, on your doorstep.
