About event

King’s Cross has unveiled a free outdoor photography exhibition celebrating the life, music and legacy of Amy Winehouse, marking the 20th anniversary of her seminal album, Back to Black. About Presented by the King’s Cross Group in partnership with Universal Music and the Amy Winehouse Estate, the exhibition has transformed 30 of King’s Cross' signature art benches in Granary Square and King’s Boulevard into an open-air gallery for residents, workers and visitors to enjoy. Widely regarded as one of the most influential albums in modern music history, Back to Black remains a cultural landmark. Amy Winehouse's deeply personal songwriting, distinctive voice and genre-defining sound captivated audiences worldwide, earning widespread critical acclaim, selling more than 25 million copies globally and winning five GRAMMY Awards. The album topped the Official UK Albums Chart and became the UK's best-selling album of 2007, securing its place as a defining record of a generation. “It's crazy that six songs made in a fit of furious musical infatuation would matter so deeply to so many people twenty years later.” – Mark Ronson, record producer, 2026 “Amy was one of one. One-of-a-kind artist. One-of-a-kind spirit. One-of-a-kind soul. Experiencing that level of talent, passion, humour, honesty, and love for what she created was a gift.” – Salaam Remi, record producer, 2026 Twenty years on, the exhibition offers a rare and intimate portrait of Amy Winehouse, seen through the eyes of the photographers who worked closely with her throughout her extraordinary career. Spanning Frank (2003), Back to Black (2006) and beyond, it brings together defining and previously unseen photographs that move beyond Amy’s public image to reveal the person behind it: joyful, funny, spontaneous and mischievous, as well as thoughtful and vulnerable. Through these candid and powerful photographs, visitors are invited to experience Amy as those closest to her knew her, not simply as a global icon, but as an extraordinary and unforgettable person whose influence continues to resonate two decades on. Few artists are as closely associated with Camden as Amy Winehouse. The North London neighbourhood was more than just her home; it was a constant source of inspiration, creativity and belonging throughout her life and career. From its legendary music venues and record shops to its vibrant markets and independent spirit, the area helped shape Amy's artistic identity and became inseparable from her story. Taking place at King's Cross in the borough where Amy spent much of her life, the exhibition provides a fitting opportunity to celebrate one of the borough's most cherished cultural figures. For fans, this is an opportunity to experience Amy as those who knew and worked with her saw her - beyond the image known around the world, to the remarkable, complex and unforgettable person behind it. The exhibition was curated in partnership with Studio Eye, the award-winning in-house creative studio spanning Island-EMI label group, who created its visual identity and brought together the featured imagery in collaboration with the photographers who generously donated their work. With special thanks to all involved for donating their images and incredible anecdotes to this celebration of Amy Winehouse: Mischa Richter, Scarlet Page, Jill Furmanovsky, Charles Moriarty, Valerie Phillips, Dave Hogan, Jake Chessum, Richard Young, Karen Robinson, Eva Vermandel, Mark Allan, Phil Knott, Brian Rasic, Diane Patrice, Alexis Maryon, Kelsey Bennett, Salaam Remi, and the Amy Winehouse estate. This exhibition forms part of King’s Cross’s wider Escape in London programme, which invites visitors to pause, play and rediscover joy in the city through unique experiences, cultural events and moments of escape, all without leaving London.
