RSVPBecoming · Alisa Gorelova An exploration of the transforming body and the shifting ideals of beauty. Painting moves beyond the canvas, merging with architecture in a spatial experience where form remains open to change. About Becoming is an exploration of form in a state of transformation. Alisa Gorelova approaches the body not as a finished image, but as a constantly changing structure: fluid, unfinished and open to new interpretations. At the heart of the project is not so much the body itself as the history of our ideas about it: beauty, harmony, proportion and the norm. Here, different conceptions of the body coexist. The elongated figures of Gothic art, the complex plasticity of Mannerism and the physical expressiveness of the Baroque appear not so much as historical styles, but as different ways of seeing and understanding the human form. Today, they are joined by new systems of representation shaped by digital culture, social media, cosmetics and biotechnology. What was once perceived as something given becomes an object of choice, transformation and reinterpretation. Gorelova’s figures exist precisely in this in-between state. Shifted proportions, additional limbs, and interwoven, fluid forms create images that resist definitive interpretation. This is not deformation, but the possibility of imagining form beyond a single norm. Yet transformation does not take place only within the image. In Becoming, the very nature of painting is transformed. Painting moves beyond the boundaries of the canvas, extends onto the walls and enters into a direct dialogue with the architecture of Gallery Can Boni. Painting, drawing, mural work and a textile installation created specifically for the historic space of the former cistern become parts of a single spatial composition. The exhibition thus transforms the gallery into a pictorial environment that cannot be experienced from a single viewpoint. The visitor moves through it, changing their perspective and, with it, their own perception of form. The artwork ceases to be merely an image and becomes a space of experience. Becoming invites us to see form not as something finished, but as a process — something that continues to change, transform and open up new possibilities. A form that never stops becoming.
