RSVPEvery morning the green chairs of the Jardin du Luxembourg are reset to a grid; by evening Paris has redrawn them. Three days of sculpture, painting, sound and installation drawn from that choreography. About Every morning a gardener in the Jardin du Luxembourg resets the green metal chairs into a neutral grid. Over the day, Paris redraws them: two chairs that draw close and then drift apart, a single chair tracking the sun, a reader keeping an arm's length of distance, a group forming for lunch. Nobody directs this choreography. Almost nobody sees it. Chaises — The Social Geometry of Luxembourg Gardens puts it in a room. Four scenarios observed in the garden — the sun-worshipper, the lovers' spat, the reader, the braid — are captured as movement data and translated at once into sculpture (one chair's afternoon becomes a vertical strand; height is time), painting and drawing, a score built from field recordings of the garden's gravel, and an installation that holds them all together. Conceived by Jimmy Gardner and produced by the New to the Wall Foundation, the project is directed by Dutch, Paris-based artist and composer Allard van Hoorn (Tate St Ives, Whitney Museum, MAAT Lisbon, Van Abbemuseum), with Quinn Lewis, Charlotte Tampol, Jessica Anne Schwartz and Wayne Pate. Opening: Tuesday 20 October, 5–8pm. Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October: noon–8pm (closing evening Thursday 5–8pm). Free entry. On the eve of Art Basel Paris.
