Directions to Away

Lola-Rose Pedersen presents a series of embroidery works made in collaboration with Fine Cell Work, a charity that teaches and employs people in prisons across England in fine needlework. About The series brings road markings and embroidery charts into dialogue as systems of instruction whose authority depends upon shared conventions and trust. Produced without traditional charts, the work explore how individual agency operates within prescribed structures, and how authorship is negotiated through collaboration. The work considers how the language of roads become metaphors for life: paths, crossroads, lanes, wrong turns, destinations, junctions and dead ends are embedded within memoir, as though life unfold across a landscape. This series posits questions about how individuals’ journeys are entangled with wider social systems, and how possibility and limitation are organised and distributed. Drawing Crafts
