RSVPAn exhibition of the life and work of Lisel Haas, a German-Jewish refugee who fled to Birmingham before the war with her life partner, Grete. The exhibition follows her photographic work, her life, and has responses from contemporary artists. About An exhibition at the Library of Birmingham. The project aims to shed light on the incredible life and work of German-Jewish refugee Lisel Haas and her partner Grete Bermbach. Having fled to the UK in 1938, Lisel settled in Birmingham. She and her father settled in Moseley, while her brother had relocated to Edgbaston in 1933. The house that Lisel and Grete lived and worked out of was 4 Grove Avenue, Moseley; given to them by the Alexandra’s theatre producer, George Owen, in his will. Haas would work with the people of Birmingham, creating cherished family photographs that can be seen in the exhibition, as well as working extensively with the theatres in Birmingham. It was developed in collaboration with the Library’s extensive archives of her photographic work, visitors are invited to see the exhibition as if they were visiting the archives themselves. We use theatre sets, portraits and personal photographs, showing the variety of her work. Contemporary artists further give responses to her work in a variety of medias. It is also supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Photography Installation Mixed media
