Exploring inequities of the early film industry while retaining the magic of the studio filmmaking, artist filmmaker Michelle Williams Gamaker upturns colonial and imperialist storytelling of early 20th century cinema. About Programmed with Williams Gamaker, this season pairs classic movies from early Hollywood and British cinema which feature racially marginalised actors: Merle Oberon, Anna May Wong and Sabu, with her own films, that restore the agency of these overlooked actors. The season concludes with Incomplete Evidence – a film festival and workshop series presented by Cardiff University and Chapter, that brings Williams Gamaker’s work in dialogue with a series of feminist, queer, and anti-racist films that subvert and reimagine film history.
