About MEZEKƎRƎ officially opens its new art and cultural space in Vienna’s Neubau district, located in the former Sophienspital. Spanning approximately 300 m², the space is dedicated to global and diasporic artistic practices and to perspectives of the Global Majority and migrants. Exhibitions and residencies come together with performance, music, literature, workshops, and collective learning. The new space opens with Brazilian artist Gê Viana’s Annunciation of Ardencies, her first solo exhibition in Europe. Eleven collages, a sculpture, a raffia installation, two altars, a sound work, and a Radiola, a sound system rooted in the reggae culture of the Brazilian state of Maranhão, transform the new space into an environment between archive, ritual, and gathering. “With MEZEKƎRƎ, we are not simply opening another exhibition space. We are creating a place where artists and communities are not invited to fit into existing structures, but to actively shape those structures themselves. We are interested in an art space where different forms of knowledge, memory, and artistic practice are given equal space,” say Marissa Lôbo, Faris Cuchi Gezahegn, and Marisel Bongola. Curated by Marissa Lôbo, Faris Cuchi Gezahegn, and Marisel Bongola, Annunciation of Ardencies grew out of Gê Viana’s residency at MEZEKƎRƎ in spring 2026. The exhibition follows Viana’s widely acclaimed presentation at the 36th São Paulo Biennial in 2025, where her monumental Radiola installation A colheita de Dan was shown and named by ArtReview as one of the Biennial’s “most compelling works.” Concurrently with her first European solo exhibition at MEZEKƎRƎ, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles is presenting her first solo exhibition in the United States.
