One-of-a-kind stoneware pieces by the ceramicist John-Eric Johnson, accompanied by the colourful abstract paintings of Aleksandra Niemczyk. About Open 10-5, Friday-Sunday (or by appointment) at Gallery White Box, Blackheath, London, SE3 0RB. “I work primarily in hand-built stoneware, creating pieces that sit between sculpture and everyday use. I enjoy the slow, physical process of making: shaping the clay, developing its surface, then waiting to see what the firing reveals. My work draws on organic forms and the tactile qualities of the natural world. I am also influenced by African pottery and Japanese ceramics, particularly their attention to form, function and the character that comes from variation. I welcome the marks and irregularities that give each piece its own presence. Having worked as a painter, I think of a ceramic surface as a place to explore texture, colour and gesture. My hope is to make objects that invite touch and bring pleasure to daily life.” John-Eric Johnson Instagram: @johnson_john_eric_ceramics "I deconstruct forms and images from my immediate landscape and reconfigure the abstract elements as balanced constellations. My geometrical compositions expand from the flatness of the canvas towards relief, building tactility through extended experimentation with textile and application: silk, cotton, paper, thick oil or acrylic paint, asphalt, and gold leaf."
