Julian Tan – Title TBD

Monte Vista Projects presents Show Title, a suite of recent paintings and sculpture by Los Angeles/Nashville based artist Julian Tan. About Monte Vista Projects is pleased to present Show Title, a suite of recent paintings and sculpture by Los Angeles/Nashville based artist Julian Tan. Show Title offers a snapshot of a world on a precipice, arrested in the moment between an event and his characters' ability to articulate or absorb it. Faced with a sublime paralysis, the flash of a new consciousness illuminates how automation has trickled into our motivations, revealing characters in moments of action now divorced from intention and extrapolated, hoping for security in repetition. The protagonist of Show Title is the light of this unnamed singularity, a driving force ready to announce itself to a world barely able to conceive of the magnitude of what now floods across them. Julian Tan's practice in both painting and sculpture is an articulation of the phenomenology of the interpersonal when measured against the surroundings of history, politics, and cultural shift. A second generation Chinese American who came to Los Angeles by way of Nashville, Tan's work seeks to narrativize the momentum fueling both exuberance and dread felt when we ask what the marriage of technology, capital and alienation have in store for us as we brace for impact against the singularity. Julian aims to capture the present while reflecting on the past and imagining the future, offering a lens through which viewers can connect with shared experiences and universal questions.
