RSVPTo open its 15th year, wagumi presents Kishu lacquerware with Atelier Densan. Master craftsperson Kumiko Tanioka demonstrates daily, with Japanese makers and free tastings. About To kick off Wagu-Michi, a series of events marking its 15th year, wagumi is holding a special showcase at OXO Gallery, featuring Kishu Shikki, the lacquerware tradition of Wakayama, with Atelier Densan. Kumiko Tanioka, a Dentō Kōgei-shi and one of Japan’s officially certified Master Craftspeople, is at the heart of it. Over four days she will be on site demonstrating her craft, with a curated selection of lacquerware from the Densan collection on display and for sale. Visitors can drop in and watch her work, or talk to her directly, for free. Alongside the lacquerware, wagumi will present a selection of Japanese crafts, food and traditions, with free tastings of matcha and artisan udon noodles. Makers include Annaj, who turns vintage kimono and obi into bags and accessories; wakokoro, with hand-woven paper cases; Inaniwa Koraido, making udon in Akita; Nishii Mokko, with wooden furniture built on the structure of the truss; and Kichiya, serving matcha drinks and Japanese patisserie. Kumiko Tanioka is also leading ticketed tray-decorating workshops during the showcase, where you decorate your own Kishu hinoki tray with lacquer and metal powder. Details and booking are on the separate workshop listing, or at wagumi-j.com/products/densan-workshop. Entry to the showcase is free. Read more Toggle Design / Fashion Crafts
