About event

The Biennale Internazionale Donna is Italy’s only women’s art biennale, a platform for contemporary art and critical reflection through exhibitions, research, and public programmes engaging international artists and curators.

The Biennale Internazionale Donna is Italy’s only women’s art biennale, now in its fifth edition, and has established itself as a platform for critical reflection on the present through contemporary artistic practices, theoretical research, and international dialogue. The 2026 edition unfolds under the curatorial project La Boemia sta sul mare. Esercitare discontinuità, immaginare altrimenti , curated by Riccardo Rizzetto. The exhibition explores nostalgia as a cultural and political device, not as a passive longing for the past, but as an active force capable of generating new imaginaries and alternative ways of thinking the present. By revisiting histories, geographies, and identities, the project opens up spaces for discontinuity and transformation. The Biennale develops across an international exhibition featuring invited artists, alongside a Satellite Project curated by Marlene Elvira Steinz, which expands the curatorial framework through additional perspectives and positions. Central to the programme is A Library for the Time Being , an ephemeral library conceived as a space for research, consultation, and activation, where knowledge becomes a shared and evolving process. Complementing the exhibition, the public programme BID V – Interferences unfolds as a constellation of screenings, walkshops, workshops, performances, and temporary exhibitions. Rather than functioning as a parallel agenda, the programme intersects with the Biennale’s curatorial field, activating different sites across the city of Trieste and fostering encounters between artists, curators, researchers, and the public. Through this layered structure, the Biennale Internazionale Donna positions itself as a dynamic space for exchange, where artistic practice becomes a tool to question, reimagine, and reshape contemporary realities.
