About event

From paint to textile to sculpture, La Obra reveals how art is built, layer by layer, and the hand behind every surface. About Dama Gallery is pleased to present La Obra , a group exhibition on view in Downtown Los Angeles. Before an artwork carries meaning, it must first be built: layer by layer, material by material, one deliberate decision at a time. La Obra turns its attention to that often-overlooked labor, the physical making of art, positioning process not as a means to an end, but as the exhibition's central subject. Spanning painting, sculpture, textile, and mixed media, the works gathered here resist a single visual language. What unites them instead is a shared insistence on material honesty: each piece invites viewers to look past the finished image and toward the hand, the tool, and the decision that shaped it. Pigment is not simply applied but built. Surface is not simply seen but excavated. Form emerges not from a single gesture, but from an accumulation of many. In an era increasingly defined by images divorced from their means of production, La Obra offers a deliberate counterpoint. The exhibition asks viewers to slow down, to consider not only what a work depicts, but how it came to exist at all, what materials were gathered, what methods were tested and discarded, what physical labor preceded the final surface presented for view. In doing so, the exhibition reframes the artist not merely as image-maker, but as maker in the fullest sense: someone whose choices of material and method are inseparable from the meaning ultimately produced. Every surface in La Obra carries evidence of its own becoming. Drips, textures, layers, and traces of process remain visible rather than concealed, transforming each work into a kind of record, a document of the artist's hand moving across time. For collectors and viewers alike, this transparency offers a rare intimacy: the opportunity to encounter not only the finished work, but the full arc of its construction. La Obra proposes that the story of an artwork does not begin at the moment of completion, but long before it, in the studio, in the material, in the accumulation of choices too often rendered invisible by the polish of a finished piece. Here, that process is brought into full view, celebrated not as a preliminary step, but as the work itself.
