His professional work has focused on making Fortune 500 companies just a little more relevant/useful. He has served as a professional talk show host, historic tour guide, talking head, speaker at too many weddings, and as a zealous advocate for his native Philadelphia. A global traveler and wannabe naturalist, his rock collection grows steadily each year. Marlize Duncan Marlize Duncan is a writer currently living the dream as a Brooklyn transplant from “Close to LA,” California. She’s written at post-golden-age BuzzFeed, taken many free shoes as a copywriter at Converse, and is now mastering her PR and social chops at a global ad agency. During her 5-9, she’s writing about her anxiety manifesting as dead boyfriends on her Substack, “Hustle and Fro,” gabbing about her extensive record collection, and thinking she’s the flyest-dressed person in Midtown, NY. Her gig as the 2023 commencement speaker at the University of Southern California was less nerve-racking than this. Johnny Gaffney Johnny Gaffney is an artist, filmmaker, and creator of Senior Centertainment, a community-based organization that brings arts programming and opportunities for creative expression to senior centers across New York City. His projects often start with real-life compulsions. Seeking Engagement is a dark comedy film based on his obsession with failed public marriage proposals, featuring 25 planned—but very real—rejections around the world. Sleep N Around is an ongoing web and IRL series in which he rents out his apartment and guilts friends and strangers into letting him sleep over. He is also working on a film about a recurring invasive surgery in his own life. Much of his work unfolds in public space through honest, vulnerable, and chaotic encounters.
