About Coinciding with Frieze London, Edel Assanti is pleased to present PAWILON , a solo exhibition by Marcin Dudek. Featuring a sweeping sculptural intervention, wall-based works, found objects and audio, PAWILON explodes the local supermarket of Dudek’s youth into fragmented pieces. Coming of age during the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, the supermarket that served the Kraków council estate on which Dudek grew up was a site where social transition and dysfunction played out against rapidly changing global economic forces. In this exhibition, Dudek strips the supermarket’s architecture back to its barest structures and unpicks precise communal touchpoints: the snaking queues stretching from the building’s entrance, early experiences of intoxication on the tree-lined lot, the frustration of incessant food shortages and acts of petty crime. Rather than wholesale recreation, Dudek places elements carefully, evoking the supermarket as a site of communality, violence, stupor, economic activity, pleasure and boredom.
