About event

Step beyond the harbour front and uncover the real Newlyn on this relaxed morning tour. About Join us for a unique behind-the-scenes walking tour through Newlyn’s back streets, uncovering the village’s rich and often hidden past. Guided by Newlyn Art Gallery Director James Green and long-time Newlyn resident Kathy Hill. Together, they offer an insider’s view of the places and stories that have shaped this remarkable fishing port and creative community. Both a thriving fishing port and a long-standing home for artists, Newlyn’s story weaves together industrial heritage, maritime life and a vibrant cultural legacy. Beginning at Newlyn Art Gallery, the circular route winds through the harbour and quieter historic lanes, avoiding busy roads where possible. This small-group tour brings Newlyn’s layered history to life, from the dramatic Newlyn Riots to the century-long tidal records still informing climate research today, and the many ways industry, innovation and creativity have shaped the village. Highlights include the story of the Rosebud and Newlyn’s slum clearances, remnants of the village’s early drinking water supply, the historic Copperworks, where past industry meets contemporary craft, and the artists who helped put the village on the cultural map. The tour concludes back at the gallery with coffee and cake in the Garden Café, with the option to stay for a short, guided introduction to the current exhibition with James, which lasts for about 20-30 minutes. Details Time: 9:30–13:00 (or later if staying for the optional exhibition tour) Start/finish: Newlyn Art Gallery Group size: Maximum 10 participants (booking essential) Refreshments: Coffee on arrival, and coffee & cake at the end Route: Circular walk including hills, narrow streets, and working harbour areas Price: £ 65 per person early-bird offer , for bookings by 14 Apr.
