About event

The exhibition On Landscape brings together international artists who are renegotiating the theme of landscape in the tension between ecological, technological and social issues. About Two forces are at the center of this: Firstly, the overload of global resources, as becomes tangible in the concept of the Anthropocene. On the other hand, there is the growing power of the digital, accelerated by artificial intelligences that are increasingly permeating everyday life and artistic practices. Nature, as an object of art, has never been a neutral representation. Since landscape painting in the 14th century. Having emerged as an independent genre in the century, it is a cultural construct. Whether as an idealized idyll, untouched wilderness or economic and cultural space – landscape has always been a projection surface. This appropriation reached its peak in the Romantic era of the 19th century. A century that quasi-religiously elevated nature under the concept of the sublime. This is also how the current perspective is measured. How do artists today view nature with knowledge of climate change, overpopulation, littering and unchecked industrialization? Landscapes can be testimonies of ecological guilt in the so-called „human age“ –and at the same time vanishing points for the longing for a better world. Humans have shaped, exploited, and destroyed nature. And yet she still seeks salvation within her. He dreams of Arcadia, which never existed. Paradise, which has always meant gardens, never primeval forests. And artists are still setting off: to the poles, into the rainforest. In search of a transhuman experience. But what happens when the landscape itself becomes artificial? What if it consists of algorithms, data, and AI-generated simulations? The exhibition asks whether such art landscapes are merely mirrors of our alienation – or whether they hold utopian potential. The exhibition On Landscape consistently focuses on the genre of landscape and presents it in different media: from painting to photography and video, to wall objects and sculptures.
