About FROSCH&CO is pleased to present New Paintings, Steve Greene’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. The show features the most recent series of abstract paintings by the Collinsville, CT-based artist. Greene’s paintings explore the relationship between the depiction of an artificial illusionistic space and the physical manipulation of paint on a flat surface. Networks of scumbled, crusty lines and irregular forms accumulate into compositions reminiscent of diagrams, maps, star charts, or medical illustrations. Defying any clear narrative, the works can appear improvised, unfinished, overworked, obsessive and yet vaguely specific; evoking strangely precise systems of information or communication, they resist being deciphered. Working with a palette that moves between saturated reds, oranges, and yellows and cooler passages of blue, soft pink, and gray, the artist builds surfaces that are exuberant and densely worked; painted slowly, they have an expressionistic quality that contrasts with their intricate construction. Meandering lines intersect with areas of thick, clotted pigment, while bulbous shapes and linear structures appear to float, collide, or become entangled, often with outlines near the edges of the canvas that seem to hold the interior shape to some sort of undefinable thingness. Each painting begins where the previous one left off. An indistinct, nonverbal idea, carrying elements of earlier works, provides a starting point, one that will usually, hopefully, get derailed by the physical act of painting. Rather than working toward a predetermined image, the artist allows the process to alter his intentions. For Steve Greene, the magic of painting lies in the collision between thinking and actually putting down pigment, when the two processes push the work in a third, unexpected direction. Steve Greene was born in 1955 and grew up in a small farming town in Arkansas. He moved to New York City in 1978, where he studied at Pratt Institute, receiving a BFA in illustration. His work has been exhibited at The Drawing Center, Art in General, The Alternative Museum, Adam Baumgold Fine Art, and the Brooklyn Museum, among other venues. His work is held in numerous corporate and private collections and has been reviewed in Two Coats of Paint and The Paris Review . Since 2019, he has lived and worked in the Farmington Valley in Connecticut. Greene is represented by FROSCH&CO.
