Over The Edge

Abstract paintings by Nici Bungey, presented by Jonathan Massey at 67 York Street Gallery, Marylebone. About Nici Bungey's practice spans a long career in abstract painting, underpinned by training at the Basel School of Design, Graphic and Media Design at the University of the Arts London, and a Master's in Textile Design from Winchester School of Art. Over time, her work has evolved into deceptively simple compositions built on proportion, symmetry, and colour relationships that reveal increasing complexity the longer you look. Her process is distinctive: layers of heat-pressed paint produce a highly polished, luminous surface that sets her work apart. While she does not claim direct influence from the great 20th-century Abstract Expressionist and Colour Field painters, she follows in their footsteps in her chromatic sensibility and symmetrical approach to the canvas. Over the Edge showcases work primarily from the last decade and is a successor to Approaching the Edge , held at the Soho Revue Gallery, London, in 2016. Since then, Nici has reached the final of both the former Jerwood Prize and the John Moores Painting Prize, whose previous winners include Peter Doig, David Hockney, and Sir Peter Blake.
