About event

Peaks of Imperfection features a beautifully curated, eclectic collection of work, by a collective of artists living with brain injuries from Submit to Love Studios, the creative heart of brain injury charity, Headway East. About Nineteen artists from Submit to Love Studios take over The Art House in Bethnal Green for an eight-day exhibition and public programme that celebrates the beauty in imperfection. Peaks of Imperfection presents painting, ceramics, sculpture, embroidery, drawing, stitchwork, poetry and music by artists who found their creative voices through Submit to Love, the acclaimed studio where more than forty artists living with brain injuries work collectively in an open studio environment. Their work has previously been shown at the Barbican, the Southbank Centre, Autograph Gallery and Rich Mix. The exhibition's title - drawn from an artwork of the same name by Submit to Love artist Graham Naylor - sets out its provocation. "This exhibition will dare you to question everything you ever thought you knew about perfection", says fellow Submit to Love artist and writer Billy Mann. For some of these artists, reaching their own peak of creative expression involves a physical ascent across the canvas to an unknown destination. In doing so, they find a way to reach inside themselves to find an instinct for expression and a desire to create. The doors of Submit to Love Studios are where all of these journeys begin and converge; a treasure trove of hope, happiness, love and laughter, where artists arrive at their own peak, discovering new gifts, connections and identities along the way. The takeover extends well beyond the exhibition, with an eight-day, bookable programme of workshops, performances and communal events - links to Eventbrite Pages for public events are found via the link on this page.
