RegisterUsing the routes from Bethnal Green station that criss cross to St Margaret's House, Rebecca (artist in Residence) explored the different paths to the same destination, focusing on chosen pause points along the way. About Rebecca was initially inspired by the poem ‘Bethnal Green’ by Nayma Chamchoun about the local area: ‘A journey to Bethnal Green. It seems odd to take this path When it doesn’t lead to you.’ But where else could the path lead? Rebecca explored some of the different routes from Bethnal Green station to her studio, noticing everyday scenes, signs, and sounds that held meaning. Along the different paths, she collected objects, images, sketches and recorded sounds. In many ways, this exploration reflects Rebecca’s circuitous route back to her current art practice. How much agency do we have in such a hard, decided landscape? Should we follow the designated paths or can we rely on our instincts to create our own ‘ desire path ’?* The exhibition artwork on canvas, fabric, paper and print offers abstract visual observations on these questions. We invite you to forge your own ‘desire path’ through the Chapel space to experience the work from this three-month residency.
