RSVPWhat Remains is a solo exhibition of thirty-one small black, white, and gray oil paintings by Sharon Cannon. Through layering, scraping, covering, and rediscovering, each painting becomes a record of change and of the earlier decisions that continue to shape its final surface. About Shoebox Projects presents What Remains , a solo exhibition by Los Angeles abstract painter Sharon Cannon, on view November 15 through December 5, 2026. The exhibition brings together a series of intimate 12-by-12-inch oil paintings made exclusively in black, white, and gray. Each painting began without a predetermined image and developed through layering, scraping, removal, revision, and rediscovery. Earlier marks may disappear from view, but they continue to shape what follows. By removing color, Cannon directs attention toward structure, rhythm, weight, light, and space. The repeated square format creates continuity across the series, while differences in surface, gesture, and density reveal the particular history of each canvas. Rather than concealing every change, Cannon allows revision to remain part of the work. The finished paintings become records of accumulated decisions and evidence of what came before. What Remains asks a simple question: What endures after change? The opening reception will be held Sunday, November 15, from 3:00–5:00 PM at Shoebox Projects in the Brewery Artist Lofts. The exhibition continues through December 5, with visits available by appointment after the opening. An artist talk will take place on Zoom on Thursday, November 19, at 6:00 PM.
