RSVPJoin artist, curator and founder of Tapestry of Black Britons , Paula Ogun Hector, for Stitched Stories, a hands-on mixed-media workshop exploring how histories, memories and stories can be transformed into textile. Working with archival materials from 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, participants will explore imagery connected to Brixton, community activism and histories of Black British resistance. Through embroidery, appliqué, collage and textile-making, you will develop your own visual responses to the archive, experimenting with ways that photographs, fragments and personal stories can be translated into stitch. The workshop forms part of the research and community engagement surrounding Uprisings: From Haiti to Brixton , a new tapestry in development within Paula Ogun Hector's evolving Tapestry of Black Britons project. The wider project explores connections between histories of Black resistance across the African diaspora, from the Haitian Revolution to Black British activism and the 1981 Brixton Uprising. No previous experience of embroidery or textile-making is required. Whether you are drawn to a particular photograph, memory, symbol or story, the workshop offers a space to explore how stitched marks can become a way of recording, remembering and retelling history.
