RSVPMarcus’ second solo session with Harlesden High Street. About Marcus Jefferson grew up in Queens Crescent, Camden, North West London. His practice examines the visual and material language of inner-city life, or “Road”, and its circulation through music, fashion and popular culture. Working with humour, appropriation and familiar objects, Jefferson considers how experiences rooted in precarity, community and survival are aestheticised, commodified and consumed. By relocating the materials and codes of everyday life into the gallery, his work draws attention to the uneasy distance between lived experience and its cultural representation. The Locker Room takes the playing field as both setting and metaphor, drawing connections between the language of football and that of trap, rap, drill and grime. Locker-room benches, muddy boots, AstroTurf and a scoreboard recast the gallery as a space structured by competition, allegiance and collective identity. Here, being “outside” becomes its own kind of sport: one shaped by positions, teams, territories and the constant negotiation of belonging. Through these overlapping languages, Jefferson considers the realities facing young Black men growing up within inner-city communities, while foregrounding the wit and inventiveness through which these experiences are articulated and transformed through music.
