About event

Dr Jess Venner joins us to celebrate her new book, The Lost Voices of Pompeii, in conversation with Dr Jane Draycott Dr Jess Venner joins us to celebrate her new book, The Lost Voices of Pompeii, in conversation with Dr Jane Draycott of the University of Glasgow. Dr Venner's book centres the lives of real Pompeiians through the lens of the 24 hours leading up to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79CE, exploring the reality of a bustling Roman city in the bay of Naples. She unearths the lives of entrepeneurial women, freed slaves, and aspiring politicians, among others, in a readable and scholarly text that brings to life a city most often remembered for its death. Dr Venner will be talking to Dr Jane Draycott about the latest archaeology in Pompeii, the use of literary sources, and the closeness and ultimately distance from the past, before signing copies of her book.
