The Overview - Paintings exploring The Overview Effect by Edward Baker

The Overview is a concept‑driven show inspired by the “overview effect,” revealing Earth’s biomes—tundra, taiga, desert, marine—as interconnected systems beneath a fragile atmosphere.

The Overview features paintings depicting nine Earth biomes: polar , marine, taiga forest, tundra, freshwater, desert, steppe and savanna; as well as other paintings depicting the Earth system as a whole and other phenomenon like sunrise and sunset from orbit. The paintings in The Overview have been inspired by abstract expressionism and neo-impressionist pointillism, balancing instinctive emotional gestures with meticulous, repeated mark-making. Through this tension between spontaneity and control, I build layered or mosaic compositions that explore movement, rhythm and intensity. While every painting represents a specific biome or Earthly phenomenon, the aim is not only to encourage a renewed appreciation for the beauty and fragility of our planet, but also to evoke an emotional response through the deliberate choice and layering of colour. All paintings in the show are for sale and include a signed certificate of authenticty.
