About event

Join us in the Engine Room for a fun, hands-on workshop with jeweller Sally Caslake! This engaging, hands‑on workshop introduces children to the colourful world of fused glass in a safe, structured, and inspiring environment. Over the course of 90 minutes, participants will design and create their own fused‑glass picture using a variety of frits (crushed glass) in different sizes, textures, and colours. What the session includes: Introduction to fused glass: Children learn what fused glass is, how it is made, and how the kiln transforms their artwork overnight. Design time: Participants can sketch a simple idea for their glass picture, exploring shape, colour, and composition. Creating with frit: Using fine, medium, and coarse frit, children build their design on a pre‑cut glass base. They experiment with blending colours, adding texture, and layering materials to bring their picture to life. Decorating a wooden easel: While their glass pieces are set aside for firing, each child marbles their own mini easel using safe, child‑friendly marbling inks. This becomes the personalised stand for their finished masterpiece. After the workshop, all glass pieces are kiln‑fired overnight to fuse the designs permanently. Finished artworks will be ready for collection the following day (afternoon), complete with each child’s decorated easel. Learning outcomes: Develops fine motor skills and creative confidence Encourages colour exploration and design thinking Introduces children to a specialist craft in an accessible way Provides a unique, lasting piece of art to take home (Suitable for 7-11 yrs) About Sally Caslake: Jeweller & Tutor at CREATE Sally is a jeweller, maths teacher and keeper of geese. She has been teaching in secondary schools since 2004 and began her jewellery journey in 2016 when she took up silversmithing, finding her passion for silver clay a year later. Sally also works in glass and her expertise is in creating lampwork beads (and mushrooms). Discovering the crossover between silver clay and ceramics, she is now exploring her skills and linking her experience in education with pottery to develop the children's and young people's programme at CREATE CIC.
