About
Artgal.Online – Beyond the Canvas: The Art and Stories of Zimbabwe Discover the artists. Explore their stories. Experience Zimbabwean art. Artgal.Online is a Swiss-based international art gallery dedicated to celebrating and promoting contemporary Zimbabwean art and traditional Shona stone sculpture. Our mission is to introduce the extraordinary creativity of Zimbabwean artists to a global audience while sharing the cultural heritage, personal experiences and human stories that give their artworks meaning. We believe that art is far more than something beautiful to hang on a wall or an object to collect. Every painting and sculpture tells a story — of identity, ancestry, tradition, everyday life, hope, struggle and the changing world around us. Understanding these stories creates a deeper connection between the artist, the artwork and the viewer. Connecting Zimbabwean Artists with the World Artgal.Online represents a carefully selected group of established and emerging Zimbabwean artists, each with a distinctive artistic voice. Among them is Keith Zenda, whose expressive paintings and artistic philosophy, known as Zendaism, explore African identity, cultural heritage and universal human emotions. Sampson Kuvenguhwa, an internationally recognised Shona sculptor, brings Zimbabwe's spiritual and ancestral traditions to life through remarkable stone sculptures. Florah Maphosa introduces a fresh, contemporary perspective through her vibrant pop-art-inspired portraits. Alongside these established voices, we actively support promising young artists, including Jonathan Chezani and Nomatter Kutsawa, whose creativity reflects the energy, ambition and potential of a new generation. Our aim is not simply to present artworks but to introduce the people behind them — their journeys, inspirations, challenges and achievements. Artgal Zim Center – Supporting Creativity at Its Source At the heart of our activities in Zimbabwe is the Artgal Zim Center in Domboshava, near Harare, directed by Keith Zenda. The centre provides a creative environment where established and emerging artists can work, learn, exchange ideas and develop their artistic careers. Through exhibitions, educational programmes, mentorship and opportunities for international exposure, we aim to help talented artists build sustainable futures through their creativity. Our exhibitions and competitions, including Tsika Dzedu – Celebrating Who We Are, provide opportunities for artists to present their work, gain recognition and connect with audiences beyond their immediate communities. We believe that supporting artists locally is just as important as introducing their work internationally. Building Bridges Through Art From our base in Switzerland, Artgal.Online connects Zimbabwean creativity with collectors, galleries and cultural institutions around the world. Our activities include international art fairs, exhibitions, online presentations and collaborations with cultural organisations. We also welcome visitors to our five private viewing rooms in Thundorf, Switzerland, where a substantial collection of contemporary Zimbabwean paintings and Shona sculptures can be experienced personally. Through our international gallery presence, including Artsy, we make Zimbabwean art accessible to collectors while continuing to develop opportunities for the artists we represent. Beyond the Canvas – Discovering the Stories Our presence on Art Circles reflects an important part of our philosophy: the story behind an artwork can be just as fascinating as the artwork itself. Rather than presenting an extensive catalogue, we invite visitors to discover a carefully curated selection of artworks and the artists who created them. Each featured work becomes a starting point for exploring Zimbabwean culture, artistic traditions, contemporary perspectives and individual creativity. We hope these encounters encourage curiosity, understanding and a lasting appreciation of African art. Looking Towards 2027 – A Cry for Freedom Our exhibition theme for 2027, Mhere Yerusununguko – A Cry for Freedom, explores universal questions of freedom, separation, discrimination, suffering and human dignity. Led by Keith Zenda and featuring contributions from a new generation of Zimbabwean artists, the programme demonstrates our belief that art has the power not only to celebrate culture but also to challenge perceptions, inspire reflection and connect people across borders. Art From the Heart At Artgal.Online, we do not believe that art should be appreciated primarily as a financial investment. We believe in collecting art because it moves us, because we connect with its story and because it brings something meaningful into our lives. Our guiding philosophy is simple: Art from the Heart. Through Art Circles, we invite you to look beyond the canvas, meet the artists and discover the remarkable creativity and cultural richness of Zimbabwe.
